A Date with Lee Morgan at Both/And Club (Hard bop, 1970)

(Trip Jazz TLP-5037).

A Lee Morgan (1938-1972) live session from 1970 on this uncommon LP. It was recorded just few months after the famous "Live at the Lighthouse" session, with the same musicians.

Lee Morgan - Umjanna:

Lee Morgan (tp)
Bennie Maupin (ts/fl/b-cl)
Harold Mabern (p)
Jymie Merritt (ampeg-b)
Mickey Roker (ds)
"Both/And" Club, San Francisco, June 1970.

"Both/And" club was a famous music venue in San Francisco from 1965 to the late 70's, located in the Divisadero area (same street as Club Morrocco and the Half Note). It received artists such as Ike and Tina Turner, Miles Davis, Hugh Masekela or Charles Lloyds. Two Archie Shepp LPs on Impulse were also recorded at Both/And.

Maybe having a date with Lee Morgan isn't always so nice, and I can't resist to share this comic titled: "She Shot Lee Morgan", relating Morgan's tragic end, shot in 1972 at Slug's Club, on the east side of Manhattan.

"Elle a tiré sur Lee Morgan", extract from very good Total Jazz comics by Blutch.
